"The harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph"- Thomas Paine
Analysing a photograph
Context
This picture was taken by UNICEF (Universal Children's Emergency Fund) to show the destruction war causes. This picture was taken in Syria, and it shows the devastation and destruction of war that interrupts the lives of innocent families. This picture shows a family of four, a dad, mum, young boy and newborn baby, fleeing from their own home in order to find safety, shelter and education for the children. I believe this picture is to help us understand the struggle innocent families have when they are caught in the middle of horrific wars, and to make us feel sympathy as in this picture we can clearly see the despair, distress and desperation in their faces. I specifically feel sympathy for the people in this picture as I can see the baby on the left, which makes me feel disappointed to think about the hopeless life that baby may have.
Connection
The picture is cleverly placed in color as it shows the people viewing it there emotions so you can much easier relate to them as feel sorry for them and it also shows you the weather and the condition they've been through. The theme is conflict as it shows us not the blood, horror and guts that occurs but the effects of all the war and what the poor people have to do and suffer for in the tough conditions that they face. the photographer has took the picture at this very exact time to capture the anguish on there distressed faces. A message portrayed here is to show us the distress people have to face just due to all the war and conflict happening in the places around them.
Comment
This is a good picture as the photographer has used the picture to create a sense of sympathy towards the person seeing the picture. the photograph represents unity towards the family as they are all stood together in height order suggesting that the father is the dominant one who will lead them from the anger and despair they have faced in there past while he also carry's there newborn child. When observing the picture there are certain things that really catch your eyes for example the contrast from the poor, depressing atmosphere to the fathers white hat and red coat. the ruined trampled on mud tells that they've struggled on there journey getting to where they are and coming through the decayed trees and passing the destroyed building which fills the space of the background and gives the picture scale. The whole picture itself also tells a sad story as the kid is clinching his bottle as there is a big chance it will be his last drink for long time.
The green grass takes away some of the sadness it leaves the sense that theirs still life and happiness in the dark gloomy picture where it tries to hook you on the sadness. The picture is also really flat when looking at the people and there clothes and it also seems a little dark at places.

The structure in the picture is heavily focused on the gloom on the families faces as it creates the most sympathy to hook you in and it helps you understand there feelings better. The picture was taken in Syria to show everyone the harsh condition that people such as this family have to go through as they have a 1 month old baby but are fleeing from there home because its not safe there anymore .It is also shown as a full picture with detail as it has something everywhere for example the destroyed building which makes the epicures structure better and shows the distance they traveled.
Composition
The picture was taken at an worms eye view to make the family look vulnerable towards the whole world. the picture also has a strong triangular line to focus on the exact facial expression as it shows the unhappiness on there face.In this photo the rule of thirds is 2/3 of the photo is the mud and the other 1/3 of the photo is the dull grey sky. Their is also a strong leading line running through the middle flowing through the man and woman’s heads and it flows just over the little boys head. The photo has used a fast shutter speed to make it look like a still image. As you can see in the photo it doesn’t look like their is a depth of field because the people and the background is clear and it would be blurry in the background. As you can see the UNICEF photographer has look up at the family and it looks like a soft lighting because its all dull and muddy in the background. My eye is drawn to the woman in the middle because she looks angry and upset they have to move away from their home and they become homeless. The person that took this photo has taken it from a worms eye view and hasn't used a tripod.
Mood Board
These photographs have inspired me with ideas to use for my own images. It's use of aperture , composition & viewpoints make these photos stand out. These pictures represent that bullying is a serious condition and people need to be aware of what an actual bully is. There are many negative physical interactions that occur between young people including fighting , practical jokes, stealing and sexual harassment. These things are not considered physical bullying unless:
:The same victim is targeted repeatedly.
:The bullies or bully intend to hurt, embarrass or hurt or intimidate the victim.
:The actions occur in a situation with a real or perceived imbalance of power such as when the bully is stronger then the victim or has a higher social standing.

I have chosen to do bullying & its consequences. The reason i have chosen to do this topic is because it is a important but needs to raise its profile.

This is my plan for my photoshoot:
First photo-shoot
Starting to develop ideas on Photoshop
To create this poster I used the spotlight tool to make a statement of homelessness and used the effect of black and white shadow to portray how dark and uneasy it would be to become homeless and be in poverty.
Final outcome
Second photo-shoot
Starting to develop ideas on Photoshop
To create my final outcome I had once again

Evaluation
The project theme is conflict , conflict is danger around the world. There are many types of conflict such as drug abuse , littering , crime , bullying etc. When I first found out that our project topic was Conflict so many ideas rushed into my head as it is quite interesting and has a lot of meaning to it. The part i enjoyed the most out of my whole journey would be taking the pictures this is because i could play about with my camera to take different images with my model being into various positions . New techniques i have learnt through the process of using photo shop is how to change and improve my image so it could fit in more with my theme. I would like to develop my photo shop skills as i only know how to use some of the tools on there so i would to try out more so i can use them my future images. i researched the photographers UNICEF . UNICEF is a campaign that provides emergency food and healthcare to children in countries that had been devastated by danger & war . It stands for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. They influenced my images by giving me ideas on how to plan out my photographs such birds eye & the background so it can fit into my theme and ideas. The technique I enjoyed the most was the brightness & contrasting tool this is because it puts a emphasis on the image to reflect helplessness. I feel like the most successful part was the final prints because we developed our ideas through our journey into photo shop. We used various toll to enhance our images such as brightness and contrast , spotlight , exposure & patch tool etc. The problem we encountered in our project was finding the perfect lighting to fit our images ideas & constantly having to adjust our camera to find the perfect angle. Another problem that occurred was the background as in one of my photo shoots the background some faults in it so we had to blemish it out. From the problems that encountered I have learnt that in order to get clean, sharp , clear images the set up is necessary to be in perfect position. If I was given the chance to do this project again the thing I would do differently is to have a wider variety of images of different aspects of conflict.
